The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. It is contested every year by eight teams representing different Indian cities. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007, with the first season taking place in 2008.

The format of the IPL involves each team playing a total of 14 matches, with the top four teams at the end of the group stage qualifying for the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two qualifiers, an eliminator, and a final. The winner of the final is crowned the IPL champion for that year.

However, the IPL has not been without its controversies. In 2013, three players were arrested on charges of spot-fixing, which resulted in the suspension of two franchises. In 2015, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years due to their involvement in the same spot-fixing scandal. Additionally, the league has also faced criticism for its impact on the schedules of international cricket teams.

Despite the controversies, the IPL continues to be a major force in the world of cricket. With the league set to expand to ten teams in the near future, the IPL is poised to become even bigger and better in the coming years.
